Jim Ellison stood at the edge of a manicured lawn, staring out at tidy rows of stones. He walked forward onto the grass, moving slowly, almost afraid to find what he was looking for. When he reached the right place he knelt down in the damp grass. Smoothing his hand across the cool surface of the stone, he read the simple engraved words: "Cherished Son. Friend of the Heart. Blair Sandburg. 1969 to 1998."
A stray gust of wind blew a leaf onto the top of the headstone. As Jim leaned forward to brush it off he heard a low growl. He froze, his hand stretched out to the stone, and turned his head slowly. Sitting in the grass a few feet away was a large dog, no, a wolf?
"That's crazy," Jim mumbled, "there aren't any wolves in Cascade." He stood slowly, then stretched out a hand toward the animal.
"Hey, boy," he said, his voice low and soothing. "Where'd you come from, huh?" At the sound of his voice, the wolf sprang to its feet and began backing away. Slowly, Jim stepped toward it. When the wolf continued to back away, Jim crouched down and held out his hand again.
"I won't hurt you. C'mere." The wolf stopped, cocked its head, then whirled around and trotted out of sight behind some ornamental bushes.
"Hey! Come back here!" Not sure why it suddenly seemed so important that he keep the wolf in sight, Jim hurried after it.
